Ex-Crew Members of the USS Kittiwake, the Cayman Islands Tourism Association invites you to enter a contest to win tickets from any Cayman Airways gateway as well as accommodations in Grand Cayman during the Kittiwake Cayman Sinking Events *.

We are soliciting compelling stories from Ex-Crew members related to the USS Kittiwake. Even if you have a certain memory, a funny story or recall something special... we would love to hear all about it! Kittiwake Mystery Lithograph Artist?

This beautiful line drawing of the former USS Kittiwake in service docked at a pier in Norfolk, will be auctioned during the sinking week event in the Cayman Islands.  This drawing was provided by a former crew member. 

There was a lady, rumor had it a captains wife, that used to just sit across from ships at the piers in Norfolk and draw line drawings of various ships.  If anybody wanted one she would make a Lithograph copy and sell it to you. 

Best as we can tell the signature appears to be a Laure S. Smith, ex-crew members thought she was in her forties back then.

Will this talented artist of the former USS Kittiwake, please step forward. 

Kittiwake Sinking Week Events

The Kittiwake will arrive in the Cayman Islands on July 20th to undergo final preparations before the sinking.

July 21 - Local Press Briefing, Grand Cayman

July 24/Saturday - Dinner, presentations & auction - venue, Grand Cayman TBD, Dress: Island Elegant. Auction of Kittiwake artifact & tickets to be the 1st one to Scuba dive/snorkel/sub on the Caribbean's newest shipwreck, Presentations about the Ship and highlights from Ex-Crew Members

July 26/Monday - Topside viewing of the Kittiwake - open to public 9am - 2pm
Closed 2 - 4pm for setup
Onboard The Kittiwake - Official Ceremony & Dedication 4 - 5pm (invitation only)
Unveiling of the plaques (Founding Sponsors & Special Dedications)

July 27/Tuesday - Ship Wreck Sinking event - 10am - 2pm
After sinking - Kittiwake closed to public
Cocktail reception: TBD

July 28/Wednesday Kittiwake Closed to public
(Inspections, anchor setting, safety checks, moorings, etc.)
Guided tours for dive staff only/orientation dives 10am-4pm (pre-scheduled groups)

July 29/Thursday - 8am - 11am Kittiwake Private tours (via submarine and dive/snorkel boats) for VIP/ Cayman Islands Government officials media, first divers/snorkelers, etc.

11am Open to public. Stay tuned to with your favorite Cayman dive operator for updates and reservations to watch the event and book the first dives to what will undoubtedly be a spectacular wreck.

Ship Wreck Sinking Date Announced

The former USS Kittiwake sinking date was annouced at the Cayman Islands Tourism Exchange (CITE) annual conference to travel industry professionals.  The ship is on schedule to be sunk on July 27th 2010 to become a new underwater ship wreck and articial reef attraction for water sports enthusiasts.

After the wreck settles on the sea floor, inspections will be completed and storm anchors secured.  The Kittiwake will be open for diving and snorkeling from July 29th 2010.
